2017 National Conference – Stay up to date on industry issues and ahead of your competition!

Uncategorized

Can you afford to miss the National Conference?
Are you really going to learn something from the National Conference?
Why should you attend the National Conference?

Well, No, Yes and plenty of reasons!

We all know that running a business is a hands on and time consuming task, and we all know that running a bakery can make that task even harder – managing bake staff and front of house staff can make it nearly a 24 hour job, competing for market share against major supermarkets, and getting the attention of not only the right staff to employ but also the right type of customer.
And just as you think that you have the right systems and processes in place, the right people for the right jobs and a great product to offer, something can change and you’re back to the beginning!

The National Conference is a great chance to see what is coming up in the future of Baking, and to forecast any changes that you may need to make.
New packaging and labeling requirements will come into effect in 2018, but the changes that you will need to make will depend on where you make your product, and who you sell your product to, and how it is sold. Sound confusing or easy to misinterpret? Get the full run down from the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science presents at the National Conference.

There will also be an update from National Weights and Measures, and what any new changes may mean to your business, as well as an update on the Skills Impact training packages and what changes will be made to the Baking and Pastry certificates.

Dr John Williams will be discussing “Gluten avoidance – is it a threat or opportunity?”

For those looking for some information on the financial side, take advantage of Kevin Tiggerman’s presentation on tightening your credit control and listen to Forensic Accountant Richard Collins talk about Taxation, the cost of goods sold and what an audit would really mean for your business – oh and of course how to avoid getting an audit!

We are also excited to confirm that we will also be presenting on:
NZ Baking trends and the current NZ baking market
The youth of Baking – what brings our youth to baking, and what do they see in our future?
Women in Baking – Successes and hurdles for the women who are in our industry
Open industry panel and forum.

So if you have ever said to yourself “things should be easier than this” or “I wish I knew where to go from here” or “How am I going to get to where I want to be?” then the best place to start is at this year’s National Conference.
Don’t miss out on finding out the tips and tricks that could set you up for your next great success!
Early bird tickets are available until the 9th May. You must pre-book for the National Conference.
For more information see the conference page on the website  or contact the BAA.

Want to know how the Judges will be scoring your entry in the Australia’s Best Pie & Pastie Comp?

Uncategorized

It’s a National Title that comes with all the perks of being named “Australia’s BEST Pie” or Australia’s BEST Pastie”, but for anyone who has found scoring high points a little bit elusive, we would like to remind you all that there are no secrets in our competition!
Every entry will be scored using a points system which is standard across all BAA competitions, and then each participant will receive their individual score sheets and comments for products entered.
Judging is conducted in front of the general crowd at the competition, and whilst competitors can’t talk to judges they are more than welcome to watch and listen as the judging is conducted.

One of the benefits of this is seeing bakeries going back to work to improve their product and then coming back the next year and getting great results – maybe even a trophy – like Adrian from KA Pies last year.
Adrian entered the competition in Melbourne in 2015, and took advantage of being able to watch and listen to the judges at work, took on his feedback regarding his pastry and anywhere else that he could improve and came back in 2016 to take out the title of Australia’s Best Pie! I wonder if he will be able to take out the title back to back this year…….

The last two years we have released a video of the judging process prior to the competition so that all participants and entrants can see exactly how the pies are judged. You can find this video on the BAA facebook page here https://business.facebook.com/207314975973322/videos/924537257584420/

Otherwise you can contact one of the team here at the BAA and we can email you a link to the video.
You can also contact the BAA if you have questions leading up to the competition – if you want to know what the judging criterias are, if you need help filling in the application or you just need a little bit more information.

Please remember to read the terms and conditions of the competition before entering – don’t forget that winners will be visited within a 4 month period to check that the pie you entered in the competition is the same as the pie that you are selling in your shop or business. This helps maintain the integrity of both the competition and the industry alike!

You can enter online now on this website under the ABPC tab or click here to be taken to the page.

You can also download an entry form and return it via email, post or fax:

2017 Australia’s Best Pastie Comp Entry Form

2017 Australia’s Best Pie Entry

Entries are still on $35.00 per entry for members or $45.00 per entry for non members, and then you have a choice of arranging hand delivery, Australia Post delivery or courier delivery.

Good luck getting your pies and pasties ready! I can’t wait to see them all in Melbourne this year 20 – 22nd June 2017, Moonee Valley Race Course
